Most water problems in the greater Twin Cities area come down to one of these three. Each one is treated differently, which is why the assessment comes first.
Maple Grove's 2024 water quality report answers the question directly: the plant removes iron and manganese, and does not soften. Hardness reaches the tap at 25 to 28 grains per gallon. Otsego's municipal supply averages 15 grains and Elk River Municipal Utilities publishes 16. Minnesota Department of Health guidance is that above 7 grains a softener is worth considering for appliance life and for taste, smell and appearance.
Maple Grove reduces manganese from 0.6 to 0.03 parts per million and iron from 0.02 to 0.001 before the water leaves the plant, and Plymouth's two plants treat for both as well. Otsego states that it does not maintain a treatment facility to remove background minerals, and uses a polyphosphate to hold them in solution instead, with source water from 10 to 17 grains and iron up to 1 milligram per liter.
The Twin Cities is not one water supply. Maple Grove, Plymouth, Otsego and Elk River each run their own, on different wells and different treatment. Parts of Corcoran are connected to Maple Grove's supply while much of the rest of the city is on private wells. What your home needs depends on which system reaches your address.
